Hotels As in other countries, hotels in Malta and Gozo range from budget to five-star resorts and from small family-run establishments to large hotels linked to international chains.

Most of the five star hotels are located in some of the most beautiful parts of the Maltese Islands and offer the ultimate in luxury and comfort. The rates are comparatively cheap and the choice is huge.

A number of five star hotels offer plasma screen televisions and unlimited Internet use in certain areas, free of charge. Most of these hotels offer large rooftop terraces with lovely views, luxurious restaurants, huge outdoor and indoor pool areas, professionally-run spa and fitness centres and beauty salons.

Four and three star hotels have luxurious bedrooms packed with facilities, top class restaurants, bars, conference rooms, pools and leisure centres all backed up with friendly employees. Obviously not all four and three star hotels have all the amenities of a five-star venue but most will have a number of them. Prices, obviously, will be cheaper allowing you more cash to spend in other exciting ways during your stay.

Guest Houses As in most places, guesthouses in Malta tend to be family run. Some of the décor you’ll find could be a little kitsch and might remind you of grandma’s house, but this could only help to make the place all the more homely. Rooms are generally simple but very clean.

Some guesthouses offer use of a garden, a nice place to hang out on warm summer evenings and a few also include buffet breakfast in the price of the room. Many will offer coffee/tea facilities in the rooms and perhaps a communal kitchen that can be used by all guests.

Hostels There are not many hostels in Malta in view that people who normally stay in hostels can usually afford to stay at a three star hotel.

Hostels in Malta are actually a little different to your average hostel in other parts of the world in that they tend to resemble self-catering apartments. In addition, they offer quite a lot of facilities not normally found in hostels including a tea/coffee maker, hairdryer, safety deposit box, fridge and even satellite TV all in-room.

Self Catering Apartments This can be quite a nice thing to do, especially if you have a large family visiting Malta or if you are going to stay in Malta for an extended amount of time. It is a great way to save on money as eating out every day can end up being a major expense. It also gives you a certain amount of freedom and flexibility that you might not get in a normal hotel.

Staying in a self-catering apartment is the closest you can get to actually living like a local as you get to shop at the same supermarkets or visit the same fruit and vegetable stores as they do.
