Malta joined the Schengen agreement on 21st December 2007, giving total freedom of movement within all the territories of the Schengen agreement to all citizens living in a country participating in Schengen Treaty (EU member states except for United Kingdom and Ireland and including Norway, Iceland and Switzerland). In addition, no visa is required for entry by United Kingdom, Irish, Canadian, Australian and American citizens. However, tourists from outside the European Union, must fill out a landing card, available on board arriving flights or in the entrance hall of the airport.

By AirThe Malta International Airport (MLA) is located at Luqa which is 5km (3 miles) south of Valletta (15 minutes by car). Buses operate regularly between the airport and the main bus terminal in Valletta whilst there is a 24-hour taxi service to all parts of Malta with fares being charged at a fixed rate. A shuttle service also runs to Cirkewwa to connect with Gozo ferries. Malta’s national airline and a number of international airlines such as Alitalia, British Airway, Lufthansa and Emirates, operate a scheduled service from many European, North African and Middle East destinations. During the past years, low cost airlines including Ryanair and Easyjet have started operating from a number of European destinations to Malta.

By SeaThere are frequent services operating to the Sicilian ports of Catania and Pozzallo and to Tunisia. The Sicilian routes are served by high-speed hydrofoils and catamarans with journey time of around 1 hour 30 minutes whilst car ferries take around 3 hours, whilst the Tunisia route is served by ferry and takes around 10 hours.
